In life, there are many things that we cannot control.

I remembered this vividly when I was in a recent yoga class, and my instructor gave me some of the best advice I have heard in a long time. She said to the class that we should all count our blessings. Instead of thinking why me, figure why not me?

That led me to reflect on many instances in my life where I would always choose anger instead of peace and reflection. When I am stuck in traffic, and I am late to work, or when I get a traffic ticket or have to wait in a never-ending line at the grocery store.

Instead of immediately resorting to anger, we should all try and think peacefully and ask ourselves questions like: Why is this happening for me, instead of why is this happening to me? Changing that one phrase, from “to me” to “for me,” can truly quiet our minds. Instead of feeling anxious about being late, why not relax and listen to your favorite podcast on the way to work in the morning. Instead of being angry that you got that ticket, take time to reflect on why that happened and then try to make a plan on how it won't happen again. When you are waiting in line at the grocery store, take the time to meet a stranger and make a new connection.

During challenging moments in life, we should all focus on what we can gain from experience rather than on what we lose. Because when we do, we become less reactive and more proactive. Our mindset can instantly change in a moment if we let it.

It is also essential to connect with daily reminders that you are healthy and capable, both emotionally and physically, in many ways.

And, if you need even more inspiration on how to do so, read on for six simple things you can try to empower your overall well-being.

MEDITATION

If the thought of getting up early to mediate fills you with dread — try taking it slow. Spend just 5-10 minutes daily on this until you get the hang of it. It is a great way to start listening to your inner voice and to center your thoughts. Over time, you can extend this and make it a 30-minute practice.

FUEL YOUR BODY THE RIGHT WAY

A healthy body equals a healthy mind. It could be as simple as eliminating certain foods, like cutting fast food out of your diet or having no sweets or sugars during the week. Listen to your body and fuel it accordingly.

TRY A BULLET  JOURNAL

Bullet journaling is another way in which you can start to tap into what is going into your daily life to help you track the past, organize the present, and plan for the future. When you have all of your thoughts written down right in front of you, it is easy to reflect and recognize what your real goals and aspirations are.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Jot down three to five things you are grateful for daily. Taking the time to appreciate the things we have and often take for granted is an essential step for self-growth.

TAKE TIME TO SELF REFLECT

There is no harm in taking some time to question the things that you do. Are you on autopilot at work? Are you always feeling tired? Do you not take the time to exercise or eat healthy? Checking in with yourself periodically will let you know when you need to switch things up and will allow you to live your life authentically and fully.

ENJOY LIFE

People really should be having fun with life experiences — it really shouldn’t be difficult. Live your life to the max. Find out what you are passionate about. Make genuine connections with people. Find causes you are excited about and find ways to make the world a better place in your own way. If you do this, you will genuinely be a happier person. Trust me.

Well-being can become effortless. Just take the time to invest in yourself and you will get there.
