With the Olympics quickly approaching, many of the top and most beloved Black women athletes are in training mode. The world is eagerly watching, waiting and rooting for these Black women in sports who are bold enough to showcase perseverance in the midst of adversity. They are inspiring women to do the same in their daily lives.

Gabby Douglas

After an eight-year hiatus for her mental health, three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas has her eyes set on the 2024 Olympic team. Douglas took a break to find joy in the sport again with hopes of returning to gymnastics’ biggest stage for the first time since the 2016 Olympics.

Decorated sprinter Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made headlines last year after withdrawing from the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest to recover from a knee injury. She is set to return for this year’s cycle of the Olympics in Paris.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka always prioritizes her mental health. She withdrew from the French Open in 2021 after revealing struggles with her mental health. Recently, she took a 15-month hiatus after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023. In January, Osaka won her first match at the Brisbane International after losing to Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

Angel Reese, affectionally known as the Bayou Barbie, led the LSU Lady Tigers to the 2023 National Championship. She was named the Most Outstanding Player for the NCAA Tournament. After a mental health break in late 2023, she is attempting to lead her team to another title.
